02 Her story

Meet Lea

What stands out

  • Petite, 161 cm
  • Long wavy auburn hair, hazel eyes
  • Theatre, interior design, ceramics
  • Sweet, spontaneous and charming
  • Home district: Oud-Zuid

Curtain down at the Stadsschouwburg, applause still ringing, and Lea is already out on the Leidseplein steps with a plan. Not the obvious bar, she says, the little one around the corner with the good lamps. Twenty minutes later she is explaining why the set designer deserves a medal, and the evening has quietly become one you will remember. She knows the city's theatres the way some people know its bars.

She is 23, petite at 161 cm, with long wavy auburn hair and hazel eyes that change colour with the light. Lea lives in Oud-Zuid, the leafy district of mansion blocks and museum lawns, and she loves that her part of town mixes grand architecture with corner cafés where the regulars know her order. She has the sweet, spontaneous charm of someone who says yes to the unexpected. A plan with her is a starting point, never a contract.

Theatre is where she lights up, from a big touring production to a tiny stage in a converted warehouse. For Lea a city is a stage, and Amsterdam, with its canal houses lit like dioramas after dark, is the finest one she knows. Her eye for a set carries straight into interior design, which she follows closely. She notices a good chair, the colour of a hotel lobby, the way a room has been lit, and she will tell you honestly what works and what does not. Her hands stay busy too. Ceramics is her weekly ritual, and she is openly proud of a slightly lopsided bowl that now holds her keys. Milena throws pots as well, if you want to compare notes.

Her own style is soft, romantic and sun-kissed, feminine without trying too hard. Oud-Zuid may look formal, but she is living proof that it knows how to play. Lea speaks English and suits guests who enjoy culture, conversation and a little improvisation. Tell us your hotel and your ideal night; she will bring the surprises.

03 An evening plan

Out with Lea

Theatre tickets bought on impulse, that is how Lea likes it. From her corner of Oud-Zuid the grand playhouse on the Leidseplein is a short walk, and she would rather grab whatever seats are left tonight than book a month ahead. On the way she steers you into a design shop, pointing at a lamp or a chair and explaining exactly why it works. She is sweet and spontaneous, and her charm is the unforced kind.

After the curtain call, dinner is somewhere candlelit with interesting tableware, because she makes ceramics and cannot resist turning a bowl over to look for the maker's mark. The route home runs along the quieter edge of the Vondelpark, and she stops beneath a lamp to tell you which scene she will be thinking about all week.

04 In her words

Lea answers

01What is the first thing you notice in a room?

The lighting. A bad lamp can spoil a beautiful restaurant, and a good one can rescue an ordinary one.

02What do you make in ceramics?

Cups and small bowls, most of them slightly lopsided. I like them better that way; the perfect ones look as if they came from a factory.

03A planned evening or a surprise?

A surprise, nearly always. Give me a time and a mood and I will find the rest, usually somewhere with lovely lighting.

05 Book her

Lea, tonight?

Going to a show near the Leidseplein? Book Lea for the performance and the drink afterwards, and let her choose the bar.
